Document Summary

Extracellular materials: extracellular materials are substances outside of cells that contribute to body mass, body fluids, interstitial fluid( in between the cells) , blood plasma, csf( cerebrospinal fluid, act as transport and dissolving media, cell secretions. Aid in lubrication and digestion: extracellular matrix. Plasma membrane: separates intracellular fluid from extracellular fluid, can best be depicted as the fluid mosaic model phospholipid bilayer w/ proteins. Multiple functions: mechanical barrier, selectively permeable, communication, cell recognition, cell signaling, electrochemical gradient ( important for nervous and muscle system function) n. Phospholipids ( saturated or unsaturated: polar phosphate group, nonpolar fatty acid tails, on both inner and outer membrane surfaces, 75% of membrane lipids. Cholesterol: hydrocarbon rings are between phospholipid tails, stabilizes the membrane, phospholipids mobility and, thus, membrane fluidity, 20% of membrane lipids, maintained membranes temperature through fluidity. Glycolipids (sticky: polar sugar groups, non-polar fatty acids, only on outer membrane surface, 5% of membrane lipids. Integral proteins: most are firmly inserted transmembrane proteins.
