● In south, small black farmers and small white farmers would even listen to

● Hard to farm in the west without a mechanical means of bringing water in or
harvesting.
● Someone tried to impose Darwinian philosophy and Bryan the christian
argued against it in court. The democrats nominate Bryan so the populists
will like them. Republicans still win twice because they go to areas like
Waukegan and tell them how farmers shouldn’t be able to bank with
collateral if these people can’t with their business.

● Progressivism- There are progressive Democrats and progressive
Republicans. Progressives were all over the country but tended to be in
urban areas.
○ Their families for generations have always competed in the same
market in a fair way. They see now that there are a lot of big
businesses getting close to monopolies. It started with a lot of
companies, and then decreased so small companies were scared. If
the businesses gain a monopoly, the price raises.
○ Progressives wanted people to be able to enter the market easily and
compete with the other firms.
○ Progressives are also fearful of immigrants. Immigrants from Eastern
and Southern Europe. They didn’t speak english, or have the same
religions, so people avoided them.
○ A lot of them were middle class in this sense because they didn’t like
the people below them or above them.
○ They thought the only way to solve problems was to enforce more
laws in the government.
○ Purification goal was to get rid of these businesses and immigrants.
