Privacy in a digital age week 3 part 1. European union citizens have the right to request internet search engines to remove search results directly related to them. Article 8; right to respect for private and family life. Article 12; no one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with their privacy, family, home or correspondence nor to attacks on honor/reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks. Prior to the internet, requests to remove stories were rare, since they were much more difficult to search for. Google only removes the contents from that country"s database, versus worldwide. In the u. s. the first amendment holds power in content recognized as reprehensible (such as revenge porn and mug shots). Scope of the right to be forgotten; fair credit reporting act"s 7 year time limit on bankruptcy, 10 year limit on civil judgments in credit ratings, expungement laws and not reporting criminal convictions of juveniles.
