Excess intake of calories, saturated fat, trans fat, alcohol, sugar, etc. In the us, 68% of adults are overweight or obese. Energy intake( calories consumed) = energy expenditure (burned by metabolism, activity,etc) Energy imbalance- fluctuations in body weight and health. Nutrition density: the nutrient/ calorie count ratio in foods. Provide large amount of nutrients (proteins, vitamins, or minerals) for a relatively small amount of calories. i. e. fruits, vegetables, whole grains, milk. Provide small amount of nutrients for a relatively large amount of calories i. e. foods high in fat, sugar, cholesterol, salt, and alcohol. Foods that contain a lot of calories but they offer a low nutritional value. They lack nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They add calories to food but few or no nutrients. Provide health benefits beyond those supplied by the traditional nutrients it contains.
