Overview: microbiology is the scientific discipline which studies microbes or microorganisms. What microbiologists do: ensure food safety, treating and preventing diseases, developing biotechnologies, studying the role of microbes in climate change and so on. Microbiology and health: knowledge of microorganisms allow humans to understand, causes and transmission of diseases, prevent spreading and epidemics, find treatments. Where are microbes found: soil, water, air, rocks, plants, normal flora (skin, mucous membranes) Extremophiles: microorganism that lives in extreme environmental conditions such as temperature, acidity, alkalinity, salinity, or others. Thermophiles: microorganisms that like moderate temperatures (37 degrees celsius) Opportunistic microorganisms: they are normally commensal, or they do not harm their host but can cause disease the host"s immune system is suppressed, potential pathogen under certain conditions. Biologists use characteristics to classify something as a living thing: made of cells, unit of structure and function, organisms: unicellular or multicellular, grow and develop, respond to stimuli, use and need energy, reproduce.
