Chapter 1: process of science: a way of knowing, based on inquiry, depends on observations that other people can confirm, limited to the study of structures and processes that we can observe and measure directly or indirectly. Start with an observation: interesting, informal observation, often unreliable and untested, anecdotal evidence. Form hypothesis: testable and falsifiable explanation for a scientific observation or question, not all explanations are hypothesis, can never be proven: support or reject. Ex: experimental groups to exercise, control groups to not exercise, check pulse before and after. Majority of experimental group heart rate increased while the control groups stayed the same. Sample size is important- number of subjects or the number of times experiment is repeated (larger numbers give you more accurate numbers) Ice cream sales and the number of shark attacks are positively correlated.
