PSYC 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Murder Of Kitty Genovese, Sympathetic Nervous System, Pluralistic Ignorance
Document Summary
Presence of others makes us less likely to help. Not due to lack of caring but to psychological paralysis. Errors of assuming no one in group perceives things as we do. To intervene in an emergency we first need to recognize that it actually is one. We need to feel a burden of responsibility for the consequences of not intervening. Presence of others make each person feel less responsible for outcome. Increase chance of acting aggressively when we are provoked. When sympathetic nervous system is highly activated. Positive or negative beliefs about people, groups, object and situations. Pervasive (can be about anything in life) Emotional feelings stimulated by an object or thought. Predispositions to act in a certain way toward attitude object. Uncomfortable state when we form two conflicting beliefs we are then driven to reduce discomfort.
