Developmental psychology- study of how behavior changes over time: research design: Cross-sectional research- one design across multiple generations, cohort effects- differences in generations. Longitudinal design- design follows one person across a time span. Post-hoc fallacy- just because b occurs after a does not mean that a causes b: example: if all murderers drank milk in childhood, don"t jump to the conclusion that milk causes murders to develop. Contact comfort- positive emotions from touch: showed the important role of physical contact in the development of attachments. The strange situation: task to assess attachment styles in human infants. Psych 110 lecture 10/16/18: attachment styles are important for predicting adjustment and well-being. Parenting styles: permissive: lenient, little discipline, very affectionate, uninvolved: neglectful and ignoring, children tend to have problems socially and emotionally, authoritarian: very strict, punishing, little affection; won"t be questioned, authoritative: supportive but clear and firm limits. Moral development: kohlberg"s theory of moral development, asked children, adolescents, and adults about moral dilemmas.
