EVSC 2200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Vascular Tissue, Xylem, Aerial Root
Document Summary
(review) tissue - a group of cells with a common function. Dermal tissue - a plant"s protective outer covering. Vascular tissue - consists of phloem and xylem, which together form a continuous vascular (transport) system throughout the plant. Xylem - transports water from the root up to the plant. Phloem - concerned with the transport of glucose and starch made during photosynthesis. Ground tissue - serves a diversity of functions including the production and storage of food, packing, and support. Root cap - root"s most outermost tip. Elongated epidermal cells in a small zone behind growing tip. Function is to increase the root"s surface area and absorptive capacity. Monocot roots have their vascular bundles arranged in a ring. Dicot roots have their xylem in the center of the root and phloem outside the xylem. Most roots store some food, but in certain plants the roots are enlarged and store large quantities of starch and other carbs.
