The main point of the design process is to think through your design: you may not be so formal in your own plans. Starting point is to first consider your objectives, desires and what you want to achieve: one way to look at this is a wish list. This could be for certain plants: another way to look at desires is by themes, such as plants for wildlife, butterflies, kids, by color, etc, thirdly there are desires for functions, such as erosion control.
