Social structure - way in which a society is organized into predictable relationships. Socially defined positions within a large group or society, from the lowest to the highest position. A person can hold several statuses at the same time. Social role - set of expectations for people who occupy a given status. Role conflict - when incompatible expectations arise from 2 or more social positions held by the same person. Role strain - difficulties that arise when the same social position imposes conflicting demands and expectations. Groups - people with similar norms, values, and expectations who interact on a regular basis. Primary group - small group with intimate, face-to-face association and cooperation. Secondary group - impersonal groups with little social intimacy or mutual understanding. Homophily - a tendency to know people like ourselves. Social networks - a set of social ties that link a person directly or indirectly to others.
