By the late 19th century, the notion of race was used to rank europeans: east coast. Anglo-saxon whites vs. the italians or irish: political and economic inequality. Methods of ranking: gender, class, race, and many other systems may naturalize unequal opportunities based on cultural models. Racial beliefs are myths about human difference in our species: many errors in scientific research and medical care, they have persisted and been manipulated. Race isn"t a myth it is a powerful system of classification which has an impact on all of us. Differential (unequal) access to the good, services, and opportunities of society by race: personally mediated racism. At the most extreme = hate crimes. Differential treatment by police/teachers/shopkeepers/wait staff/others: internalized racism. Acceptance of people by that ranking system, an embrace of whiteness. Overdetermined: the success of students from wealthy families is overdetermined, determine, account for, or cause (something) in more than one way or with more conditions than are necessary.
