Violence against women (vaw) and gender-based violence (gbv) used interchangeably. Both: umbrella terms that include physical, sexual, and/or psychological abuse. Both may pertain to intimate r"s or other r"s. But gbv includes violence against men, boys, and people who are gender non conforming. Gbv is also violence directed against a person on the basis of gender. Vaw acknowledges heightened vulnerability of women and girls. Vaw = any act of gbv that ends in harm or suffering to women or girls. Any and all sexual contact or activity without consent. Ongoing pattern of behavior in an r in which one person exerts power and control over another (goes beyond physical or sexual contact - can be emotional abuse) 35% of women worldwide have experienced either ipv or non partner sexual violence in their lifetimes. 30% of women report they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner. 2012 nationally- rep study of 18-28 american women.
