PSYCH 509 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Egosyntonic And Egodystonic, Overtraining, Stamen
Document Summary
General outline for presenting disorder: symptoms (sx, differential diagnosis (dif dix) Looking at one disorder and how it is often mistaken as anther disorder: epidemiology (epid) Taking a side-trip into the nature of causality: necessary cause. Vulnerability factor must be present to develop disorder. Ex. inability to metabolize phenylalanine -> pku. Good for medical diseases or organic diseases: sufficient cause. If vulnerability factor is present, person will develop disorder. But vulnerability factor need not be present to develop disorder. Do not know of any sufficient cause in clinical psychology. Negative cognitive style and low serotonin can lead to depression: contributory cause. If vulnerability factor is present, chances of developing disorder is increased. Recognition that vulnerability factors have additive effect. Ex: low serotonin + neg. cog. style + neg. parenting -> dep. Used in clinical psychology: proximal vs. distal causes (the causal time frame) Proximal causes: causes that operate shortly before the appearance of sxs.
