Race is an idea that was created, not discovered: not biologically real, socially constructed. Race is invented: first used in context of colonization of american indian territories and enslavement of africans in the americas. Used to validate the use of labor and create a hierarchy of (cid:862)(cid:271)etter tha(cid:374)s(cid:863) a(cid:374)d (cid:862)less tha(cid:374)s(cid:863) People still assume races are genetically different: we share 99. 9% of genes, there"s more genetic variation within racial groups (not between them) Physical traits and significance varies over time: assumptions about athletic ability, assumptions about iq, biblical ideas. Europe first explained origins of new groups of people using the bible: eugenics. You can tell a perso(cid:374)"s intelligence due to their physical traits. Ja(cid:373)es baldwi(cid:374) (cid:862)(cid:272)olor is (cid:374)ot a hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) or perso(cid:374)al reality, it"s a politi(cid:272)al reality. (cid:863) Race : a symbolic category, based on phenotype and ancestry, culturally specific and time specific, misrecognized as natural.
