MHS men’s health reading 2-14-19
Lohan
Men’s health studies should be based on ‘critical studies of men’ which come from
feminist theory
Critical studies then integrated into the context of inequality literature to account for
variance between men and between men and women.
Two types of lit to draw from 1) Inequality literature 2) men’s health studies- mens and
masculinities
2 types of writing on men and masculinities
Men’s studies
Intellectual and community based movement seeking to reaffirm ‘essentialist’ notion of
manhood in light of changing women’s roles: crisis of men straying from traditional gender
balance (anti feminism)
CSM critical studies on men
Gendered nature of men’s lives (comes from feminism and LGBTQIA studies)
3 principles
1) seeing gender as socially constructed
2) challenging hegemonic masculinity
3) challenging gender power relations ** esp. this (prioritizing power in gender
relations)
Hegemony of men: men’s position of power in relation to women
Seeks theorise men’s lives without excluding women an femininity
Connecting health inequality and masculinity
3 explanations of health inequalities
Material/structural
Societal health- access to food, housing, amenities
Problem w this: hard to determine primary causes of low income/class’s poor health-
why does health decrease as class/income level decreases
Certain material factors like cold housing dont have that big of an effect compared to
poor diet
Hard: material conditions are complete explanation of inequality
Soft: clustering effect of material factors and how material factors interact with cultural
and psychosocial factors ( ex. Dangerous job= higher stress
**CSM
distinguish between men of different socio economic groups
Cultural/behavioral
Hard: bad health behavior chosen in different social classes explain away social
gradients
Soft: bad health behaviors are distributed differently among classes and contribute to
the gradients
**CSM
Hegemonic cultural constructs of masculinities (male stoicism and invincibility)=high
health risk activities and lack of seeking advice
