Document Summary

Tuberculosis is completely curable, yet it is the leading infectious cause of death among young adults. Exacting its toll on poor people, ot ceased to occasion much interest. Infectious disease remain the single most common cause of death. Inequalities in the distribution and outcomes of infectious diseases. Disparities that are biological in their expression, but are largely socially determined. The outbreaks of hiv, tuberculosis and even ebola, and the social responses to these outbreaks, all suggest that the models of disease emergence need to be dynamic, systemic, and critical. Biosocial analysis: draws freely on clinical medicine and on social theory, linking molecular epidemiology to history, ethnography and political economy. Selective blindness: depends on what type of anthropologist or physician one is. The two disciplines are notably known for their lack of attention to oppression and to the sickness of the poor. A blindness to inequality and structural violence, often the local manifestation of transnational forces, has long marred anthropology.
