The migrant labor system in southern africa has been blamed for many of the region"s ills, including the disruption of family and rural underdevelopment. It has also been blamed for the spread of hiv. Nearly all the male aids patients who began turning up at their hospital six years before had been migrant workers in southern africa. Some women are sexually coerced but many probably contracted the virus in consensual premarital or extramarital relationships. Miners have highest salaries but highest prevalence of tuberculosis. Mozambique was one of the most industrialized countries in the world. The portuguese colonial government protected businesses, and other portuguese territories provided a guaranteed market.
