Document Summary
Subcultural theory--various segments of the population have conflicting interests: what is criminal or deviant for some is the norm for others, class-dominant theory--dominant class interests determine what is labeled deviant or criminal. Idea that those who commit deviant behavior are, above all, powerless. Largely ignores female perspectives/analyses and female deviant behavior: majority of research done by and about males, women"s deviance more likely to be stigmatized than comparable male behavior (ex. sex, women victimized by virtue of gender. Labeling theory--deviance is a product of the labels people attach to certain types of behaviors: primary deviance--rule breaking that may incur a label of deviant and thus influence how people think about you and act towards you. Secondary deviance--occurs after person labeled deviant accepts the label as part of his or her identity and begins to act in conformity with the label (internalization of deviant label) Social control--attempts to control behaviors of others to ensure conformity.
