Document Summary
Modified carnassial tooth allowing them to break through the exoskeleton. Incisors are often procumbent (projecting forward) ability to crab prey and bring it to mouth. Lack cecum (part of digestive tract that breaks down plant material) Myrmecaphagous specialization of ants and termites. Strong jaws with sharp incisors and canines (carnassial teeth) Broad moliform teeth with either selenodont (deer) or lophadont (elephant) Transverse movement in their lower jaw used for grinding food. Multichambered stomach to allow for breakdown of cellulous. Production of cud that is passed back to the mouth. Takes moisture out of food and puts it into the stomach lining. Coprophagy eating own feces for a second round of digestion. Some species produce two different types of feces (rabbits and lagomorphs) Foregut species are more efficient and can survive on a high quality low quantity diets. Hindgut species are much faster but requires more food meaning they require a high quantity low quality diet.
