Fictional terms have an empty extension, some non-fictional have empty extensions too. Deiniendum word or group of words that is supposed to be deined (word: cat) Deiniens word/group of words that does the deining (deinition: small, domesticatedetc) Stipulative deinitions assign a new meaning to a word. Created in response to some new phenomenon or development. Offspring of a male tiger/female = tigon. Lexical deinition dictionary deinition, term that already has a deinition. Precising deinition speciic/technical contexts, reduce vagueness. Theoretical deinition assign meaning to terms according to a theoretical framework. Offer a way to understand a phenomenon via framework. Persuasive deinitions engender a particular attitude. Done by assigning an emotional or value-laden meaning to a word while making it appear that the word really has that meaning in the language it is used. Ex: capitalism is the economic system in which humanity is sacrificed to the wanton quest for money, and mutual respect is replaced with greed and alienation.
