Hobbes: an all powerful sovereign: if you want a good government you need order, in order to have order you need a limited number of people in charge, solidarity. Locke: limited government: there is room for difference, not everyone has to be on the same page. Ideology: a set of ideas about politics related to one another. Someone has to decided what the law means in any specific case. Right of some versus rights of others. Pluralistic republic: people of different kinds operating in the same community. Hierarchy: some people are better than others, some people are condemned to be poor, others are appropriately rich. Deference to those above and noblesse oblige to those below: you have responsibility for those below you, those above you are better than you therefore you are deferential to them. Importance of community: each to receive proper due. Includes classical liberal notion of maximized economic freedom.
