PSYCH 210 Lecture 6: DQ_6
Document Summary
My example of misuse correlation statistic is playing the lottery. Many individuals who play lottery games like powerball or mega million often believe that purchasing multiple lottery tickets increases their odds of winning the grand jackpot. For example, the overall odds of winning the grand jackpot in powerball is 1:292 million. If you were to purchase two tickets, the odds do not drop to 1:146 million but instead you have two chances at 1:292 million (assuming each ticket has number combinations that are different). The odds do not change regardless of how many tickets purchases or the number of people that play. In order to modify the overall odds, there would need to be a change to amount balls drawn from the pool (increase/or decrease). I believe this is a hard concept for many individuals to comprehend and often the dream of winning millions of dollars overtakes actual reality.
