Holism - the whole is more than the sum of its parts. In medicine - not only physical health, but spiritual and mental as well. Ethnomedicine- the variation in approach to medicine culturally ex: In usa - lack of appetite is worrying but not severe. In ecuador - lack of appetite is extremely worrisome. Illness- more variable, may not be physical in nature, can stem from the abstract rather than physical. Disease- clinical, physical, clear reason, separate from social and abstract influence. Not necessarily separate completely, neither is inherently more right . Evil eye, mal de ojo - if you look at someone who is vulnerable, such as a newborn, with any negative energy, it will transfer illness unto them. Folk remedies are not necessarily unscientific or wrong can have basis in medical fact, just discovered through different processes. The mountains are not only healers, but religious. A good person will have the flame jump around.
