Constantine, and remained fairly unified until the great schism in 1054, when eastern, greek- derived and western, latin-derived churches made the divide due to a difference in politics and theology. This resulted in orthodoxy in the east and catholicism in the west. Orthodoxy was adopted by the eastern slavs of kievan rus" by prince vladimir in the year 988. His emissaries were awed by the wealth, power, and splendor of (orthodox) constantinople, capital of the byzantine empire and one of the greatest cities of its time. The church was officially established in 1907 (the church that stands today was built in the 1940"s).
