L97 IAS 3680 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Axis Powers, Mensheviks, Nuclear Arms Race
Document Summary
Prolonged competition and confrontation, with brief periods of cooperation, have marked soviet-american relations. The cold war emerged as a problem in world history in the 1940s after the defeat of the axis powers in wwii. The most important event of the 20th century was wwi because it shaped everything that came afterward in history. Led to the end of several empires: Germany to abide by new rules and this laid the foundation for wwii. League of nations was set up to prevent another war from breaking out. The defeat of the axis powers radically changed the face of europe and created new states. It basically quit because lenin decided to sign a different treaty with the germans. In exchange for peace russia gave up a lot of territory. Lenin chose this because he thought wwi was draining resources for the revolution, he wanted to focus on russia.
