The threat can be eliminated today, at a cost. On grounds of distributive justice, it is tempting to think so. Modified situation: assume that all nations are at equal risk for collision with the asteroid because one cannot predict where the collision will occur. India and the nations of africa and europe. From the standpoint of domestic self-interest, those nations with the most to lose will naturally seek a larger fund than those nations facing lower risks. Because the united states is so wealthy, shouldn"t it contribute more to the general cause, helping the poorer nations who could be more greatly affected. Problem: we have said that the asteroid will not hit the earth for another 100 years.
