COUN 410 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Intersectionality, Impression Management
Document Summary
What is self: a multidimensional process of internalizing and acting from social/cultural perspectives, how we see ourselves depends on the culture/society in which we live, emerging in communication with others. The particular other: people significant to us. Ex: parent who keeps you safe in their home: fearful. Ex: a sibling who ignores you: anxious/ambivalent. Ex: deciding if you want to marry your partner. The generalized other: generalizing views held by others in society: race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, disability, religion. ~there are more intersections of life people have to deal with yet these are the common ones for many people. Interactions and communications with others are through cultural values. Institutions that organize our society can communicate different viewpoints of the generalized other: the media is a major platform for the generalized other and cultural values. Other perspectives of self: we are multi-dimensional hence intersectionality.
