Competent african americans are ignored for coaching and management positions. African american athletes are not in playing positions requiring leadership and decision making. Other positions that are disproportionately white: officials and referees, leadership in college sports, ownership and sports administration. Increased participation by minorities in sport does not mean sports are free of racial discrimination. Gender problems in sport affect females and males. Social roles defining acceptable behaviors for males and females in a given society. A person"s innate, psychological identification as a man, woman, or some other gender. May not correspond to sex assigned at one"s birth. Emphasizes a diversity of sexuality and gender identity based cultures. Natural division of labor in families based on gender (females give birth) Men work/ toil, and women maintain the home and raise children. Industrialization has made gender differentiation less functional, but traditional system remains: [is there really a barrier for women in most professions? ]
