PSYC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Episodic Memory, Spreading Activation, Procedural Memory
Document Summary
Memory- our ability to encode to store and retrieve information external events -> (sensory input) -> sensory memory -> (attention to important or novel information. encoding) -> working/short term memory -> (encoding/retrieving) -> long term memory storage. Cognitive model of memory- information processing by computer encoding -> storage -> retrieval (keyboard) (flash drive) (monitor) Memory processes- 3 processes: encoding- getting info into memory. All incoming info must stop in sensory memory. Info in sensory memory fades very quickly, unless we attend to it and transfer it to the next level of memory. Acts like holding bin, retaining info until we select items we want to attend to. Memory processes being to be involved in stm. Encoding: what we get in, converting info into meaningful units. encoding the info into some form of language. ~effortful processing: information that you have consciously and intentionally have to. Stm storage is approximately =/- 7 bits of info.
