-The world is designed for able-bodied individuals we take for granted our daily activities and
routes, but people with physical disabilities have to build in extra time to get around

Generational Differences
-Mass shootings have impacted our current generation
-9/11 or wars have shaped previous generations
Ageism = the systemic mistreatment of elders
-Most seniors are mentally and physically active regardless of age with a great deal to
contribute
-Societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, make them feel
unwelcomed and otherwise generalize as if they were all the same
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967/1975
-67’ originally focused on anyone 40-years or older, now does include younger ages
Elders
-Inadequate healthcare and unaffordable housing, especially if they are poor or working
class
-Dismiss value or role they can or should play in society or family situations
-Older women are marginalized from positions of power in politics and movies
-Mistreatment/abuse in homes for elderly
Issues Relevant to Aging Senior Citizens:
-Disease Alzheimer’s, dementia, cataracts, macular degeneration, and osteoporosis these
health issues and more threaten a person’s day-to-day functioning capabilities
-Physical Assistance Getting groceries, going to doctor’s visits, even small tasks such as
cleaning the house
-Housing & Financial Security
-Health Care Costs Due to Increase in Disease
-Loneliness
-Financial Predators
-Abuse or Neglect Nursing homes and assisted living facilities struggle with under-staffing
issues, which can lead to abuse or neglect of the residents
-Transportation
-Changing social climate Adjusting to technological changes
