In this module, one will consider their life through the lens of the larger social system in which one lives. Instead of thinking about one"s individual life choices or decisions made along roads traveled, one can imagine societal barriers; structures that are imposing and limiting. Consider how much these systems and structures have to do with perceived "individual choices. " This term has a host of negative connotations that include domination, control, and force. This is not always the case, however, as is demonstrated by the term below, "power with. " The actual definition of power is "possession of control, authority, or influence over others; substantial influence; the power to make arbitrary decisions and compel obedience" (webster"s online dictionary, 2005). Power, as defined by the physics equation below, suggests that the harder and faster one works, the more power one creates. Acknowledging these realities can sometimes contribute to frustration when working closely with marginalized families.
