SOCSCI 2EL0 Lecture 4: FamMod4B
Document Summary
The inclusion of women in the labour force has shifted gender roles. As perceptions of family form shift the frequency of adoption, fertility treatments, surrogate motherhood, and same sex parenting are on the rise. In addition, many families have two parents working outside the home therefore childcare both formal and informal have become a necessary part of raising children today. In reviewing the bibby survey conducted in 2002 canadians are very comfortable in their roles as parents and many believe that their values as parents come from how they were parented as children. While paid work continues to be more accessible for women, unpaid family work continues to be an expectation of today"s generation of women. Women continue to be the primary caregiver to children, while many also work outside the home. A wide margin, between men and women"s wages, continues to exist although more recent attention has been paid to eliminating income disparities.
