Document Summary
Special needs children are usually described as children who are experiencing atypical development, either accelerated or delayed. Special needs may be related to physical, emotional, social and or cognitive development. Shimoni and baxter (2008) refer to it as special needs relate to any child who presents specific concerns to his or her parents, and who requires extra support in order to integrate successfully into educational programs. There are a number of terms related to special needs that are used interchangeably in community programs: exceptional children, developmentally delayed, handicapped or atypical. The term special needs is most useful because it can describe all extra needs that apply to all children, whether related to a particular diagnosis or not. (shimoni & baxter, 2008). Types of disabilities include mobility/agility, mental/cognitive, hearing, speaking, and visual impairment. Disabilities may be apparent or hidden, severe or mild, singular or multiple, chronic or intermittent.
