Pathophysiology: trauma to the head causes diffuse soft tissue damage. Cause: trauma to head, fall, sports-related, mva, sudden acceleration / deceleration of the head. Complications: delayed hematoma, post-concussion syndrome, headache, dizziness, difficulty thinking, seizure, persistent vomiting, hemorrhage, post-trauma vertigo. Manifestations: tenderness on skull palpation, evidence of external trauma, vacant stare, slurring / incoherent speech. Diagnostics: ct / mri to rule out more serious injury. Treatment: observation for mental status decline, bed rest until symptom-free, cognitive rest, avoidance of further injury.
