Document Summary

Differences from voice comparison and voice profiling is the speaker identification by victims and witnesses cannot rely on audio recordings. All evidence that is available is the perception of the offender"s voice by a witness, to be evaluated against a later voice sample. Two different situations possible: offender is familiar to the witness, offender is not familiar to the witness, rape or other attacks on the victim. Situation case: offender is known to the witness from the time prior to the crime. Witness is often able to identify voice by name. The reliability of witness evidence can be questioned due to the three factors: channel limitations, speaker limitations, listener limitations. Distance between speaker and listener is large = low amplitude of offender"s speech compared to environmental sounds. Loud other sounds sourced mask part of the speech. Obstacle between speaker and listener that filters out resonances and voice recognition. > e. g. offender wore mask of motorcycle helmet.
