Biology 3316A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Hspa8, Mitophagy
Document Summary
Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic: additional add on problems with diabetes, protac is new. Autophagy is self eating: recycling proteins, can be selective, cell needs to turn over certain proteins at certain times. Autophagy: orderly degradation of cellular components, ability to recycle and reuse macromolecules formation of a phagophore then an autophagosome. Macroautophagy: can be selective, turn over of one organelle, wide scale. Microautophagy: direct uptake from outside to inside of lipids and glycogen. Similar protein to hsp: antibodies can cross react, take specific protein and target it to lysosome through a specific channel. No evidence of prolonged lives in humans: only evidence comes from lab rats. Selective degradation of mitochondria by autophagy; usually occurs to defection mitochondria following stress or damage. The cells are surviving - just recycling proteins. If checkpoints are passed, the cell will survive (undergo mitosis) Autophagy is normal - cells will become toxic without it.
