Document Summary

Metabolism: entirety of org"s chem reactions: emergent property formed from interactions btwn molecules. Input of energy; products end up with more potential (chemical) energy. 6: intro to metabolism: energy coupling: use of exergonic process to drive an endergonic one; used to manage energy resources & therefore do work, most energy coupling in cells is mediated by atp. 1st law energy can be transferred and transformed, but it cannot be created/destroyed. 2nd law every energy transfer or transformation inc entropy of universe (bc some energy is lost to surroundings as heat, and heat inc entropy: entropy: measure of molecular disorder/chaos/randomness, energy is dispersed in a system. Atp (adenosine triphosphate): to release energy, one of the 3 phosphates are taken away (bond is broken by hydrolysis), creating adp (adenosine diphosphate) Is renewable (if u add a phosphate to adp, tho that requires energy: this is phosphorylation! Types of work done by cell: chemical work, transport work, mechanical work.
