PSYC1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Genetic Epistemology, Object Permanence, Cognitive Development
Document Summary
Piaget - genetic epistemology (developmental), wanted to understand knowledge. Studying the minds of children and their knowledge at different ages. Mainly came up with demonstrations rather than experiments. 4 stage theory, different levels of intellectual development through life. Infancy (birth-2 years): sensorimotor stage (2-6/7 years): pre-operational stage (6/7-12/13): concrete operational stage (12/13 - rest of life): formal operational stage. Scheme: uses it to refer to the knowledge we have in our minds to refer to different things, a organized pattern of action, the basic unit of thought. All types of schemes involve actions of the individual. End of the sensory period is the ability of the child to have an idea of things in the mind. Object permanence (existence of an object is independent of our actions upon it), and ability to imitate things in knowledge. Signs - child shows anticipation, intentional behavior.
