PSY 433 : Cultural differences in defining the self
Document Summary
Concepts or self differ between cultures and time periods in terms of the extent to which they are group-based versus individually-based and the extent to which they are based on ascribed characteristics, doing, or having. These differences in the sense of self are shown to have systematic effects on behavior resulting in an increased role for possessions in defining identity in large scale modern cultures. Every single person has their own unique identity and culture. An "identity" is the image that one projects out into the rest of the world and "culture" is the image which one has of themselves. Culture plays a huge role in shaping our identity. A person"s beliefs and morals are made up by culture and remain throughout entire life. Culture is what made us the person we are today and determines who or what we choose to associate ourself with.
