Ethnic group - a group whose members share a subjective belief in the common ancestry. People who belong to a certain ethnic group view themselves to be united by kinship, blood, etc. Ethnic identity is based on ascriptive traits things we are born with. Skin color, speaking a language, into a religion, born into a physical location. A lot of identities fall in between the two sides of the spectrum. Changing a religion, something you are born into, is okay in usa but in other parts of the world you cannot do that. Languages are also different since you are born into the circumstance to know a native language but you might be able to learn others as you go. Ethnicity is multidimensional and it means that basis of ethnic conflicts also vary. Nation - a group that commands your ultimate loyalty. Some nations don"t have states: kurds, palestinians. Some states contained more than one nation: ussr, yugoslavia.
