THEO-001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Mahayana, Shinran, Pure Land
Document Summary
Pure land buddhism - the most popular type of buddhism in japan. Budhha did not know if he should teach because he was convinced that teaching was too difficult. He was convinced by the god to teach eventually. The budhhist teaching were very difficult and that is why there was a decline overtime. Buddhism as a living reality is encapsulated in 3 words : take refuge in the buddha, in the dharma and in the sanga (community). His teachings started with what is the problem? - it"s an existential problem. The suffering -cause of suffering is the desire, craving, and attachment. Nirvana - blowing out the flame of craving. (in pure land you are in the best possible. Nirvana is a enlightenment/realization that whatever we crave doesn"t have any condition to achieve nirvana) subsistent meaning to us. Realizing that all phenomena have no self-nature. Realizing that all phenomena are co-dependently arisen: that no phenomena is subsistent and independent.
