Sinus: the vertebral column includes seven cervical vertebrae, twelve thoracic vertebrae, one sacrum of five fused vertebrae and one coccyx formed from three to five fused vertebrae, the first cervical vertebra is also known as the atlas. Compact bone has osteons that look like onion-like rings closely packed together. Compact bone provides strength and support in the shaft and bone surface regions. Spongy bone reduces the weight of the bone and provides spaces for red bone marrow. An example of this joint is the attachment of a tooth to its socket.
