Crop failure, disease, erratic behavior of inds. Result of evil actions of devil, witches, demons, spirits. In christianity theme of cosmic struggle between good & evil. Battled for possession of human individual souls. Devil and minions responsible for turning people into deviants (but with god"s support) Via temptation - ind complicit if said yes to evil. Via possession - ind not responsible for bad behaviour. 16th century - shift away from supernatural explanations. Begins in renaissance continues into enlightenment (18thc)
