Using the compound microscope seems to be very simple laboratory. But there are techniques and important rules that every student must be familiar with in order to fully optimize its use. These techniques are also important in protecting one"s eye from strain when examining objects under the microscope for a long period of time. Use properly the microscope and its parts. Magnify a specimen using the lower power objectives. Lower the optical system by turning the coarse adjustment knob until the tip of the lens of the objective is about or inch from the surface of the stage: look into the eyepiece. Adjust the mirror so that the field being observe will be illuminated: hair strand, mount the hair strand on a slide.
