Document Summary

A highly specialized cell that communicates information in electrical and chemical form. The basic unit of the nervous system also called nerve cells. Provide structural support nutrition and removal of cell wastes, manufacture myelin sheath, wrapped around axons of some neurons, increasing the communication speed. Multiple sclerosis: disease involving degeneration of the myelin sheath. A traumatized nerve should recover in 6-12 weeks. At birth, a baby"s brain contains 1 million neurons. Dendrites: receive information from other neurons and sensory receptors. Cell body: processes nutrients and provides energy for neuron. Nodes of ranvier: are gaps in the myelin sheath. Myelin sheath: insulates the axon and increases communication speed. Axons: carries information to other neurons, muscles, and glands. Communication between neurons takes place at the synapse, the junction between two adjoining neurons. Synapse is the communication point between two neurons, between the dendrite on one neuron and the axon on the other neuron. Are chemical transmitters in the nervous system.
