Document Summary

Thunderstorms and tornadoes: formation conditions for thunderstorms, thunder and lightning, types of thunderstorms, lifecycle of thunderstorms, derechos, tornado formation, tornado intensity and damage, tornado myths, tornado climatology. Thunderstorms: thunderstorms a storm containing lightning and thunder, formation conditions warm, humid air; a lifting mechanism, and an unstable environment. If you can hear thunder you are close enough to be struck by lightning. If you can"t get inside when lightning threatens, avoid open field and high areas, isolated tall objects, and water. If lightning is happening around you, squat down and make yourself small: the speed of sound is affected by temperature, temperature differences can cause sound to travel along a curved path. Heat lightning is the name sometimes given to lightning seen in the distance at night, seemingly without thunder: common in summer atmospheric conditions, or sometimes just long distances, mean we don"t hear the thunder.
