MUS-208 Lecture Notes - Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Silent Way
Document Summary
Jazz found in this popular music yet another opportunity for the assimilation of new musical idioms, sounds, and concepts. This crossover with rock is most referred to as jazz/rock fusion or just fusion. Miles davis proved to be a central figure in the development of jazz/rock fusion. As third-stream jazz was a move toward the literate classical tradition, jazz/rock fusion at first offered a balancing gesture toward the more improvised oral tradition. In addition to the never electronic instruments and greater amplification, jazz also borrowed the new and increasingly complex rock rhythms. The rhythm guitar in most fusion groups plays the chordal punctuation that had been previously assigned to the piano, and the drums, like the bass move to move prominent position in the ensemble. In later fusion groups, the rhythm section is further expanded with multiple keyboards and electronic effects for most all the other instruments.
