POPM 4230 Lecture Notes - Adaptive Immune System, Humoral Immunity, Bone Marrow
Document Summary
Unit 3 notes - immunology, vaccination, and antimicrobial use. Function: maintain the health of an individual by protecting the body against invaders called antigens. Antigen substance capable of inducing specific immune response. Immunoglobulin complex multi-faceted system made up of cellular and humoral components that project animals from disease. Vaccine immunogenic material that induces a specific, acquired immune response. Lymphocytes specialized cells that recognize and react to antigens found throughout the body. Produced in bone marrow as stem cells + mature in different sites of the body: maturation. Thymus = site for t lymphocytes for cell-mediated immunity. Bone marrow = site for b lymphocytes for humoral immunity. Nonspecific defense mechanisms that comes into play immediately or within hours of an antigen stimulating the immune system. Not antigen specific and action does not result in immunologic memory. Integument = external layers of skin provides physical + chemical barrier: mucous membranes. Traps particles and facilitates removal of these particles.
