BSC 2010C Lecture : Bio Notes 152 - Disaccharides
Document Summary
Disaccharides are carbohydrates composed of two monosaccharide units joined together by a glycosidic bond, formed through a condensation reaction. The resulting molecule is known as a glycoside. One of the most common disaccharides is sucrose, also known as table sugar. It is composed of glucose and fructose units, which are joined together by an , -1,2-glycosidic bond. Sucrose is produced by plants and is found in high concentrations in sugarcane and sugar beets. Another common disaccharide is lactose, which is composed of glucose and galactose units joined together by a -1,4-glycosidic bond. Lactose is found in milk and other dairy products. Maltose is a disaccharide composed of two glucose units joined together by an -1,4-glycosidic bond. Maltose is produced during the digestion of starch in the human body and is also found in germinating seeds.
